Is It Safe to Buy a Used or Refurbished iPhone? What to Check
Updated
Used, refurbished, "renewed" — what's the difference?
"Used" means pre-owned and, from a good seller, tested and graded. "Refurbished" means restored to full working order. Vague terms like "renewed" can mean either — so what matters isn't the label but whether the phone was tested, graded, and its IMEI checked.
The 5 things to check before you buy
- Activation Lock off: the previous owner must have signed out of iCloud / removed Find My.
- Clean IMEI: not reported lost, stolen, or blacklisted by a carrier.
- Battery health: shown as a percentage; 80%+ is good for daily use.
- Function test: screen, cameras, Face/Touch ID, speakers, charging and cellular all working.
- Grade disclosed: A+/A/B/C so you know the cosmetic condition up front.
Activation Lock and iCloud
An iPhone still linked to someone's iCloud can't be set up — this is Apple's anti-theft protection. Always confirm the phone has been signed out and factory reset before purchase. Every phone we sell has this cleared, so it activates cleanly on any carrier.
Battery, warranty and returns
Check the battery health percentage and ask about the return window and warranty. We show battery health on every listing and note the condition, so there are no surprises after you buy.

Frequently asked questions
›Is it safe to buy a used iPhone?
Yes, when it's function-tested, graded, IMEI-clean, and signed out of the previous owner's iCloud. Buy from a seller that tests and labels each phone.
›How do I know a used iPhone isn't stolen or blacklisted?
Check the IMEI — a clean IMEI isn't reported lost, stolen or blacklisted by a carrier. We confirm a clean IMEI on every phone we sell.
›What is Activation Lock?
It's Apple's anti-theft feature that ties an iPhone to the owner's iCloud. It must be removed (owner signed out) before a used iPhone can be set up.
›Does a used iPhone come with a warranty?
It depends on the seller. We list each phone's condition and battery health and stand behind what we sell — ask about the current return and warranty terms.
